H.H. Bennett’s 1875 Studio

One of the highlighted features of our school group tours is the 1875 historic photography studio. School groups will be guided through the studio while surrounded by original objects like furnishings, tools and hand-operated equipment all used by Bennett and his family. There are multiple rooms in the studio for school groups to see including the workroom, dark room, and the “operating room” where the portraits were “struck”.

Beyond this room groups will see the historic store front. The Bennett family stocked it with mounted photographs, stereoview cards, and a variety of souvenirs and Native American crafts for sale. Many tourists who – thanks in large part to Bennett’s photography – began to discover the beauty of the Wisconsin Dells in growing numbers purchased these goods.
